The chess engine's evaluation function has serious weaknesses. It probably played 6...BXF2+ because the positional bonus for taking away castling and the positional bonus for giving check both added up to a value greater than the piece.Black can try to set up a trap with 7...H7-H5, but that should not work against any player of decent strength.. The games chess engine really needs work.. really enjoy this game, but there was some trouble at the start, for sure;the microsoft visual c++ files failed to load-in properly with the install. I noticed my 'first time' runner hung when installing, so I aborted it and started again. it seemed to complete, but then I got an error about a missing .dll after the 'launch screen' for the game. ---- this was a pretty easy fix. microsoft allows you to download these for free from their site, just look up the file it says is missing and look for a good microsoft link to the distro pack. there was a youtub video about PES game needing the same file, with a nice little tutorial on how to do this and links.after this, it was launching but hanging on a black or white screen - depending on the video options I tried. I was about to return it then I turned off the ANTI ALAISING option and boom. it was all good after that. so mess with v-sync and the other options if you get a bad launch, this helps, but I also had to reboot my system after the desktop hung too, so expect the unexpected. its too bad i encountered these issues because otherwise I am absolutely loving the game and it is a very nice addition to the family of chess software. many thanks to the devs for having titles like this and keeping the game going on into the 21st century on steam !! the graphics are really lovely and the atmosphere and ambiance is exactly what I was looking for. I would be willing to pay for more DLC on these too, like other play-area packs, awesome pieces, etc. as long as you can overcome any tech issues you run into initially I would say absolutely this is a 9/10 purchase, but b/c of seeing how many people are frustrated with the data end of the game (not really the game itself) it's gotta lose a couple points for that.thankfully the devs seem into helping if you contact them, which is always nice.8.75/10 get into it !. That adrenaline rush when you are close for a checkmate...Oh yeah... good game. Finally, we have a nice, but affordable little chess game on Steam (without annoying advertisements, Simply Chess!), a necessity that was missing for a long time. I appreciate that I have the choice to play against humans, play against the AI or solve little problems with an increasing degree of difficulty. I feel a comfortable, relaxing and somehow noble atmosphere, brooding over my virtual board while listening to Mozart.The controls are something one has to get used to, and the game does not do a good job explaining itself in this regard. - Sometimes, it is hard to distinguish the different kinds of (glass-like half transparent) pieces from the default perspective; left-click and drag moves your camera though, and you can check wether this is a Queen or a Bishop... - Moving your pieces with your mouse does not work well sometimes, because the hitboxes are not set right; you can however solve this with your arrow keys. - Setting the volume of music and sound effects is explained ingame, but not in a helpful way; again, clicking the value and dragging the mouse (up or down) is the solution. - Finally: Leaving the game temporarily with ALT-TAB is not possible; if you want to read tutorials or do something else without quitting the game, you have to choose "fullscreen off" in the launcher menu. Such difficulties are more than unnecessary, and I hope the developer will fix them with patches! Nevertheless, the game works as it is, and I love chess, therefore I give it a 6\/10.
